  • Presentation Evening

At 7:00pm on the evening of Monday 15 June at the Nursteed Centre, 36 local charities and other organisations will be handed cheques totalling nearly £11,000 to support their valuable work in the community and overseas.

This is the last event of the current Lionistic year and on 28 June Lion President Jerry King will hand over his chain of office to our new Lion President Roger Mapp.

Congratulations to Jerry on a very enjoyable and successful year in which about £30,000 has been raised and distributed to local charities, individual beneficiaries and other organisations.

Lion President Jerry would like to thank the people of Devizes and all those who helped and supported the Club's fund raising in his year.

Good luck and Best Wishes to the incoming Lion President Roger Mapp.

Details of events that are being planned in his year will appear here in due course.
Many of this year's events will be repeated.

These are some of our recent events:

  • Golf Day

On Wednesday 19 May 2009 North Wilts Golf Club hosted this annual event organised jointly by Devizes Lions and Devizes Rotary Clubs. The participating teams enjoyed a good day's golf followed by dinner in the club house and raised about £1650 which will be shared equally between Lions and Rotary and used to support their respective charities.

  • May Fayre

Devizes Lions took over the Market Place, the Corn Exchange and the Shambles for the annual May Fayre on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May.

There were stalls, rides, refreshments, music, dance, Punch and Judy, a vehicle display, antiques sale and much more that was enjoyed by all who attended.

The weather may not have been the best but at least it stayed dry for the most part and it was great to see so many townspeople enjoying themselves in the Market Place.

Lions' stalls and games made something over £5,500 on the day and other charities and clubs that took part also tell us that they did well.

Thanks to all those who helped and supported us and made the day such a success.

  • Sports Coaching Weekend     28 and 29 March 2009.

The Lions Club of Devizes held its 22nd Sports Coaching Weekend on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th March 2009 for children in school year groups 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.
Nearly 500 children had the opportunity to try out one of a number of different sports under the supervision of qualified coaches.

  • Spring Serenade

This popular event took place on Saturday 28th March 2009 featuring the   Aldbourne Band   and   The Great Western Chorus.

  • Swimarathon

Our second Swimarathon took place on Saturday 28th February 2009 at the Leisure Centre.

This followed the same pattern as last year's event: We had 143 swimmers. The oldest were a gentleman of 85 and a lady of 83 (the chap did two sessions, one as a "one man team" raising funds for Dorothy House and the other as a member of our own "Desperadoes" team). The youngest swimmer was a 9 year old boy from St Peter's School.

In total they completed 2,323 lengths, which works out as 36.3 miles. The event raised about £4,500 which will benefit local organisations and individuals.

Thanks to all who participated and helped make the event such a success.

  • Christmas Float

Santa with his Lion Clown helpers
toured Devizes and Lavington in the run-up
to Christmas starting on 01 December, with
lights, seasonal music and sweeties from Santa.
We finished with a day at Morrisons
        on Saturday 20 December.

The weather was kind to us and our collections raised £4,700 which is a magnificent total considering the present difficult financial times.

  • Christmas Fair

The Lions annuual Christmas Fair was held at the Corn Exchange on Saturday 06 December 2008.

We sold toys, bikes, games, books, jigsaws, tools, small items of furniture, records, CDs, kitchen utensils, sports goods, gardening items, bric-a brac, unwanted gifts etc, etc.
The stalls took almost £8,500 which may be a record and will enable us to contribute the net proceeds of about £6,000 to support local and Lions International charities.

  • Quiz Night

This was a low key "friendly" event run at Southbroom Junior School on Monday 24 November 2008.     Good fun was had by all and a modest but worthwhile £170 was raised for our charitable purposes.

  • Children in Need

        BBC CHILDREN IN NEED

Despite the appalling weather, the collection on
Thursday 13 November raised £235 for the
        BBC Children in Need Appeal.

Thanks to all who contributed and a
special thanks to Pudsey for coming to help.

  • Sponsored Walk

The Lions' annual SPONSORED WALK of about ten miles from the Wharf onto Roundway Hill and back is eagerly anticipated and is used by many local groups and charities to raise funds.

The 26th annual Walk took place on Sunday 19th October. The weather was kind to the 150 walkers who were raising funds for about 33 local groups and charities.

Recipient organisations were invited to a special presentation evening in December, when the Lions handed over the hard-earned money. Almost £10,500 was raised.

Thanks to all who participated and helped make the event such an enjoyable and successful one.

  • Charity Clay Pigeon Shoot

The first event of the 2008/09 Devizes Lions calendar was a CHARITY CLAY SHOOT held on Sunday 24 August at the URCHFONT GUN CLUB.

Not only did the participants enjoy a good morning's shooting, but the event also raised just over £500 which will be used for charitable purposes.

Our thanks to the Urchfont Gun Club and the participants who helped make the morning such a success. It will be repeated next year. Watch this web site for details.
